The Chair of Innovation Economics at the Technical University of Berlin is hosting a special seminar on Technology Markets, Patent Pools and Standards which will be held Thursday August 30th, 2012 (15:30-17:00), VWS Schleuseninsel, Müller-Breslau Strasse 15, Berlin, Room 128. The seminar takes place subsequent to the doctoral defence of Tim Pohlmann on Patenting and Coordination in ICT Standardization: Empirical Analyses of Essential Patents, Patent Pools, and Standards Consortia, which will be held 12:00 the same day.

15:30-16:00 Tobias Kretschmer on:
Tobias Kretschmer is head of the Institute for Strategy, Technology and Organization (ISTO) which studies strategic management, technology and organization. Tobias Kretschmer’s research focuses on the economics of network industries. He has written several empirical and theoretical papers on mobile telephony, consumer electronics, and information and communication technology (ICT), which have been published in the International Journal of Industrial Organization, the Review of Industrial Organization, and the Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade, among others. In addition, Dr. Kretschmer has also worked on public policy in standard battles, the dynamics of technology adoption and on capturing synergies in modular organizations.
16:00-16:30 Yann Ménière on:
Yann Ménière is assistant professor at MINES ParisTech, France. His research interests deal with the economics of innovation, intellectual property rights, and standardization in IT industries. His teaching activities include courses on the economics of IT standards at Imperial College Business School, and the economics of IP at Law School of Université Catholique de Louvain. As an economic expert associated with Microeconomics (a consulting firm in economics) he has been involved in various antitrust cases relating to IP, innovation and standards in IT industries.
16:30-17:00 Justus Baron on:
Justus Baron is a last-year PhD student in Applied Industrial Organization at Mines ParisTech, France. His PhD thesis deals with the empirical analysis of the role of patents in standard development. He has written several papers on patent pools, standards consortia and essential patents, which have been presented at a large number of international conferences. His co-author Julia Schmidt is a PhD student in Macroeconomics at the Graduate Institute of HEI Genève, Switzerland. Her work focuses on short run fluctuations and the business cycle.
17:00-17:30 Axel Mangelsdorf on:
Axel Mangelsdorf is an Economist and currently a visiting Researcher at the Berlin Institute of Technology and a Research Fellow at BAM Federal Institute of Material Research and Testing in Berlin, Germany. He is responsible for undertaking applied economic research in Technology Management, Innovation Economics and International Trade. Before he joined BAM, he worked as a Consultant at the Development Economics Research Group of the World Bank in Washington D.C. and he worked as a Consultant for the Trade and Environment Division of the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
