The talk will provide the perspective of business on standards and their various functions in relation to technical regulation, policy making, and market success in general. We will be looking at the mechanisms of making use of standards for gaining access to markets. This will include a discussion of the EU New Legislative Framework, its scope as well as its limitations. Moreover, standards in the context of industrial policy will be studied and the potential and risks for businesses in this context. Further aspects for business in relation to standardization is the management of intellectual property rights and different way of exploiting patents in standardization. Finally, Open Source is growing in relevance and to some extend has evolved as a competitor to standardization as it comes to innovation and fast technology development. Some examples for recent leading Open Source developments will be highlighted and their relation to standardization will be explored.
